“ni hao ma… (again)” this time from beijing, china!

having aready been to the southwestern part of china, we had an opportunity this time to visit the northeastern part… the capital of china:  beijing (a.k.a. “peking” or “the forbidden city“).

ni hao ma... welcome to "the great wall of china"!

to be honest, i really wasn’t looking forward to going. i was hoping we could rest/stay longer in hong kong before our next scheduled trip to japan.
but having gone, all i can say is: (besides being mind-numbingly COLD…) beijing ROCKED!
of course, vivien was responsible for this (as she has/is/will continue to be the reason all things in my life ROCK )!  it was awesome seeing her switch gears from speaking cantonese to mandarin. she navigated us through the streets as if we were locals! what an incredible skill it is to be multi-lingual!
**SIDE NOTE: upon our return, i’m gonna get miss rosetta stone and learn some mandarin (maybe i’ll also have to look into mandy and pandy)! as is evident, china will continue to develop its global presence and will be a (if not “the“) dominant presence/force in the next 10-25 years. and Lord willing, we hope to return (and hopefully i’ll be fluent in mandarin!).**

upon arrival, i really wasn’t sure what to expect. i remember being somewhat fearful of beijing/china. growing up as an army brat and having lived in germany before “the wall” came down, i remember when watching tv shows, instead of regular commercials pitching consumerproducts, we had to watch 30 second u.s. military spots on the evils of communism + to be wary of foreign enemies of the u.s. i guess this had a lasting influence on me, but ultimately it was irrelevant and unnecessary. what i found was that there was just so much to see/witness and experience in beijing! and the people…? they were SOOO kind and willing to help. it blew me away how warm they were (and how much they SPIT… and coming from a spitter like me, that’s saying A LOT)!
we started with tiananmen square. we were on the same street where history was made about 20 years ago! i remember every tv station in the world played and replayed the lone man in white standing up to the row of tanks coming down the street. weird to think how much has changed since then…
and with the government’s censorship/effort to block details of this tragic event, we were told by locals that many of today’s younger chinese don’t even recognize who is + the significance of “the tank man” and what transpired during the fateful summer of 1989.

we proceeded to enter the forbidden city -  imperial palace from the ming dynasty to the end of the qing dynasty (roughly 5 centuries!). it was declared a world heritage site in 1987, and listed by unesco as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world… another words, this place was MASSIVE!

we strolled a few blocks over to a very happening street with shops galore! even saw a joint korea-china venture lotte shopping mall. after being numbed by store after store, we decided to head a few blocks to the famous wángfujing night market…
now THIS is what beijing is about!

right as we entered the initial entrance gate we were greeted by: live scorpions + seahorses (why aren’t there any good live scorpions + seahorses joint in seattle?!?! or for that matter… good pig brains?!?!)!

got a chance to visit the summer palace (a summer resort for empress dowager cixi. a “summer resort“?!?! zaang! ballaz! either that or the emperor got caught doing something bad…). sorry viv, the best summer palace i can offer is shared communal usage of the gazeebo @ greenlake!

saw both the jinyuan (largest in china) + the place mall (which boasts the world’s largest lcd tv @ over 6,000 sq. m.! beats this kid’s setup hands down!):

after eating scorpions + seahorses, we decided to splurge on dinner @ the BALLA green t house!

but none of the shopping malls in beijing (or anywhere in the world for that matter) compared to the experience we had at the infamous: silk street market! this place was WILD!
packed inside this 5 floor building (including a basement), were more little booths/shops than you could imagine or your brain could even process. the place was SO cramped with shops and each shopkeepers wanted your money! you literally couldn’t walk more than 3-4 feet before being swarmed, grabbed at, pulled and mauled by the shopkeepers.
now… if you can handle this kind of thing (which i really can’t), then this IS your place to bargain and get some cool stuff. and we were so lucky to have a family friend of viv’s come along. he had a reputation of making shopkeepers cry and angry (and sometimes both) with his bargaining skills.
his rules of bargaining?
1. NEVER give or reveal your price until the shopkeeper guesses it and
2. do NOT bargain unless you’re serious about buying it.
thanks to him viv + i have a ridiculously cheap priced north face backpacks (which will come in handy in new zealand + australia)! sure it says, “the morth face” but who cares… 

mutianyu – a section of the great wall. truly an awe-inspiring moment to step foot on this landmark! because it was so cold, viv + i almost had the great wall to ourselves for the entire day. during the peak summer seasons, there are scores and scores of visitors there and nearly impossible to take a picture w/o having some step in front of the camera. another cool feature of mutianyu, they have a toboggan ride you can take down to the visitor’s base area… definitely worth taking!

[*this was to be posted last week, but discovered that wordpress + twitter were still being unreachable while in china.]

viv and i got a chance to vist union church this past sunday (an english-speaking church where we attend whenever we’re in hk). it was a good sunday for us to be there. much was heard and digested (spiritually and physically) and still gestating in me (mainly the spiritual things now).
being away from seattle/home and our normal day-to-day routines we’ve sort of lost track of time… we’re no longer looking at clocks, outlook calendars, etc. and it’s weird but equally good for our soul! we find ourselves unsure of the day of the week or even the time of the month. that’s why it was both serendipitous and a bit sad when the welcoming pastor announced a thanksgiving feast/meal after service.
thanksgiving time already?!?!
has that much time passed?
my stomach was like: turkey, cranberries, sweet potato and pumpkin pie… YES!

BUT… it also meant the first time i’d be away from my immediate/extended family for the holidays and our time abroad will be coming to a close soon…
as the service continued, the senior pastor gave the message on mary’s (lazarus’ sister) act of breaking the bottle of nard/using her hair to wipe Jesus’ feet… and judas’ response to this display of worship. just having been in france and seeing the molinard museum and learning more about perfume/nard made the message that much more interesting to me.
i’m sure when judas voiced his concern/criticism to Christ it must’ve sounded legit and perhaps even justified… i mean c’mon… the loss of 300 denarii (if the nard had been sold instead of broken) and the money that could’ve been raised for the poor? almost a year’s worth of wages! the guy could’ve sounded downright saintly!
i’m fearful/concerned because i could’ve easily thought and/or said the same thing… i would’ve rationalized all the good and longer-lasting good that could’ve been done had the bottle been sold. BUT i realize judas as the treasurer had alterior motives behind the sale of the perfume:

john 12:6: “he did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.“

(i truly feel bad for judas… seems like his life/life choices were unfair/plain sucked.  )
anyway, back to mary and her simple act of reckless abandon. no second thought or guessing… taking such a valuable resource and using it to beautifully worship the Lord.
near the end of his message, the pastor invited up adrian merryman. a former investment banker and ceo of several companies who walked away from a lucrative career in the financial business world to focus on what God had placed on his heart as a young child… to use his resources to help the poor through opportunity international. to hear pastor greg anderson’s message and his interview with adrian, click here.
i’m so encouraged to be hearing of more and more grass-root movements/non-profs (thanks to the internet) being started by everyday folks who feel like they simply have to “do something“. and when i hear this i seemingly convince myself:

“when i get to ‘this point’ in life or ‘that point’ then i will do something“.

what the #@%! is wrong with me?!?! why is my heart/head not drop-kicked into action NOW? my inactivity is costing lives! do whatever i can NOW, however i can NOW!
i know i will struggle to continually find balance in my life. do i use my real-world business experience to get a job and make money and then to give charitably out of my earnings or do i work for a non-profit organization (and potentially not make enough for my mortgage) instead? can i find a balance and perhaps do both… and do it well?
i will continue to press on/struggle to be faithful in prayer and faithful in response to what the Lord calls vivien and i to do.

“Lord, no matter what… may my life be a reckless and beautiful act of worship to You and of service unto others.

“hallo…” from amsterdam, netherlands!

definitely an interesting place… especially after the scenic, country-side feel we experienced while in southern france. amsterdam is well known for many things: it’s historic churches/buildings, great public transportations: trains, trams, buses + bicycles, windmills and beautiful canals… and probably equally known for their, er… ummm… well, open views (like hatred of google, recreational drug use + prostitution, just to name a few).

I AM-sterdam-it!

viv had heard about their “special” brownies so we decided to take a stroll towards the dam square (yeah, i chuckled in disbelief when i first heard this square was actually called “dam square“). anyway, we ran across no shortage of “special” coffeeshops that offered these delectable delights. and in the immortal words of former president ‘slick willy‘: we ‘did not inhale‘. j/k…
viv nor i, partook in any of these delirium-inducing desserts… besides, there were PLENTY of other delicious pastries/treats to munch on… one of my favorites: stroopwafels (thanks for the heads-up on this one, julie)! 

"stroopwafels" - they are AWE-friggin-SOME (and i just found out trader joe's sells them... whee!)

we managed to visit many of their local cafes and eat some killer food. our favorite place was recommended by several of the locals:

viv + i having our hazelnut latte + cafe americano at tisfris cafe...

and our corresponding lunch, a roast beef + avocado samich, a sausage, cheese + tomato samich and the best tomato basil soup i've had!

dam square was dam nice. a mash-up of modern + medival sites and sounds. a bit too touristy for me though.

when in amsterdam, do as the amsterdam-ians… we decided to rent a tandem bike and stroll around the city streets.

and wouldn’t you know it? being rain-less (albeit a little cold) our entire stay in amsterdam, the day we decide to bike, it rains and is super windy! like a gentleman, i was in the front seat and took most of the rain and wind to my face…

and what is a visit here if you don’t see the infamous ‘red-light district‘? it was quite a shock as viv and i walked and discovered our first bay of windows occupied by women right across the street from the ??? church. and as we strolled more, we found that no matter what street we turned into, we found ourselves facing more banks and banks of these windows.

it launched viv + i into a discussion about these women, their profession, how they got into this line of work and countless others. these women are someone’s daughters/sisters/and some… even mothers!
wanting to be a father (hopefully soon if the Lord’s willing!), i told viv how my heart was just crushed and deeply saddened by what we were witnessing. this led me to think of countless millions who are trafficked and sold into the sex-industry. it renewed our desire and commitment to the great organizations that are out there wanting to bring justice and liberation to those oppressed (http://www.ijm.org + http://www.thesoldproject.org just to name a few).
wasn’t expecting to get on a soap box, but i guess my heart needed to vomit this out. it is something viv + i will continue to wrestle,pray and dedicate our lives + resources to help make an impact for God’s kingdom and His people.

- 9 streets shopping district:  some pretty cool stores. you can definitely spend hours/days walking around and enjoying what each unique place/store has to offer.
- anne frank huis museum.
- van gogh musem.
- rikjsmuseum “national museum“:  an absolutely beautiful museum… but much of it was under renovation. it featured many european artists’ collections alongside a group of dutch master paintings.
- red-light district:  you just have to experience it.
- canal cruise.

“bonjour mon ami…” from southern france!

using “rick steves’ provence & the french riviera guidebook“ (a.k.a. our “other” bible in southern france), vivien outlined a tour de southern france via our avis rental car: an opel. definitely a different experience for me… cause when i vacation, i tend to stay in one hotel/location for the duration of the stay and take a taxi. the long, windy and scenic roads from town to town were pretty fun to drive.

not knowing what to expect for the city driving/parking conditions, it was crazy and stressful! the streets were SO narrow and often-times one-way and it was shared by cars, bicyclists, scooters, cats and dogs all at the same time! in most intersections, they had these roundabouts that were a bit confusing as well… and just required you to pretty much close your eye and jump into the circle of death and drive around until you find the right road to get off to! you just had to pay attention to the many arrowed signs and pray you chose the right one!

when in doubt... always head toward "centre ville"...

total distance driven: 1234km = 766.772 miles
total spent on diesel: €106 euros = $158.73 USD
total number of swear words dropped: 11 “mutha F-bombs”

thank the Lord that there were so many things to ease my driving stress… paellas, poissons and pâtisseries, oh my!

- paris

then a short flight to provence (southeastern region in france on the mediterranean, adjacent to italy):
- marseille
- aix en provence:  a happening place where one can enjoy people watching and modern shopping all while checking out some great museums dedicated to van gogh + cezanne.

- arles:  van gogh called this place home for some time. here is where we also experienced “le mistral” for the first time. passing through the valleys of the rhone and durance rivers, the wind that blew through the streets and the open courtyards were UNREAL! there were times when i opened our rental car doors and really believed the door would rip off from the sheer strength of the mistral!
- st. remy:  great cafés and even greater chocolates! (and van gogh committed himself to an insane asylum in this city).
- les baux

home of "château des baux"... a fortified castle built in the 10th century. one of the most beautiful historic castle/site in france!

- avignon:  we stayed inside the walls of this once fortified city. it is well known for its “palais des papes” (palace of the popes), where several popes and antipopes lived from the early 14th to early 15th centuries and “pont-saint bénézet” (bridge of st. bénézet).

a historical palace (which became the residence of the popes) in avignon, it's one of the largest and most important medieval gothic buildings in europe.

- orange:  seeing the theatre was seriously humbling. since we went kinda late in the tourist season, it was pretty much empty when we got there. and to enter this incredible structure… and taking the site all in gave me goosebumps + chills. to imagine what it must’ve been like in the past when it was filled to capacity and full of energy! the funniest part, was this lone cat that i had to take a picture of… so patiently sitting/waiting in seat 65 for some show to begin. hey andy, can this pic be submitted to http://icanhascheezburger.com/?

- pont du gard (one of the many landmarks in the provence region that is on unesco’s world heritage list).  and man… when you see this structure it’s truly awe-inspiring. so beautiful, so rich in historic worth… and still standing after all these years! makes me realize how young any of the structures we might have in the u.s.

- uzes
- cassis:  a small, quaint seaside port city… it’s referred to as “the poor man’s st. tropez“. this place was definitely my fav! if i go back, i’d stay here longer for sure. the vibe in this place was so nice and relaxed! and after being in the larger cities of aix en provence, arles and avignon, coming here was a great change of pace. the restaurants and shops near the water and the ocean view were breath-taking. cassis is also known for their  magnificent ”calanques” (see picture below). when we return to southern france in the future, we hope to spend more time here so we can charter a boat to the callanque en vau and spend the day on the beach (pictured below viv) and swim the crystal clear waters! t+t, bring your snorkel, mask + fins and join us… oui oui!

after an aftenoon coffee + gelato, a stroll to the beachfront does a soul good!

i scream, you scream, we all scream for gelato!

after hiking 1.5 hours we arrived to callanque en vau. your own private beach!

and then off to côte d’azur (a.k.a. “the french riviera“):
- cannes
- monaco:  i have NEVER seen so many maseratis, bentleys, rolls royces, and aston martins in my life. i thought viv + i would get shot for driving our rental opel through here.

the casino monte carlo... where true ballaz go to play! there's an admission fee just to get in and gamble!

- eze village
- nice: definitely a tourist mecca. they had an incredible open market on most mornings which looked like pike place market times 10. and the beachfront here was off the chart. seeing the ocean’s color at sunset almost looked fake. viv + i visited the marc chagall biblical museum (prior to going, i had never heard of this artist and after visiting, i am now a HUGE fan of his work) and saw his 12 paintings depicting various stories from genesis + exodus of the old testament (he also has 5 paintings inspired by song of songs). all i could do was just stand speechless and be mesmerized as i looked at each of the paintings. you could literally spend hours looking at each drawing. so much was conveyed through these paintings (the user of shapes and amazing colors)… a reminder to keep being creative and explore how art and faith intersects in my life.

definitely a dream destination (more so for vivien + her love for outdoor adventure than i). the sights were spectacular and awe-inspiring… how could one look at it all and not acknowledge the Creator?

the places:

• kathmandu (1400m/4593ft)
• pokhara (910m/2986ft) – a short 25min flight from kathmandu.
• phedi (950m/3116ft) – starting point of our 6-day trek with a gazillion stone steps and insane incline grade!
  we were blessed to have our guide: manoj + our porter: kumar. over the journey they became more like family! while we had our hiking boots, performance gear attire, trekking poles and only carrying day packs… kumar wore nike tennis shoes, jeans, a button-up shirt, used NO poles and carried our 35lb. backpack through some sick terrain. he saved our lives (and our backs… literally).
  ** note: am thankful for international porter protection group (i.p.p.g.) and hope they continue to look out/care for the porters. and in the future, we hope trekkers will have enough porters for the gear they bring as to not overload/work and pose potential harm to them!
• tolka (1790m/5872ft) – first night’s stay. having no electricity at this teahouse, viv + i, ended up going to sleep at 7pm! one of the most restful nights of sleep i ever had! only took going to nepal to find it. who would’ve thunk it?
• ghandruk (2020m/6627ft) – imagine having this view while eating breakfast!

• tadapani (2520m/8268ft) - took this shot right outside the teahouse we stayed at on my panasonic gh-1. i stayed as motionless as humanly possible for about 40 seconds to capture this shot. but after seeing the picture, i think it was worth it! stunning to see: the starry night and (from l. to r.) annapurna south (7219m/23684ft), hiunchuli (6441m/21132ft), gangapurna (7455m/24457ft), annapurna III (7555m/24786ft) and machapuchare (6993m/22943ft) – a.k.a. “fish tail peak” so clearly. nice being away from all of the city lights now and then…

  - start hiking @ 4:30am for a sight that literally takes your breath away (from the beauty as well as the cold weather + uphill climb). from poon hill you will witness an unobstructed view of sunrise over the high himalayas.

• tatopani (1220m/4002ft) – means “hot water” in nepali.
  - after spending days climbing upwards, i figured a steep descent of almost 2000m through rhododendron and magnolia forests would be a welcomed relief. but trekking for 8+ grueling hours passing smaller/secluded villages, secondary schools, long/scary bridges and a pretty severe landslide, i concluded that climbing downhill (as well as uphill) = still “sucks“… thankfully the hot water spring helped all our aching leg muscles!  :)

• beni (820m/2690ft) – took an almost 2 hour jeep ride averaging 5mph through the most bumpy, dusty dirt path you can ever imagine. then we switched into a taxi to continue on for about 4+ hours to pokhara. i really contemplated getting out and hiking b/c i couldn’t take the motion sickness + diesel/exhaust poisoning.  :(

• back to home #2 -> hong kong…

currently, suffering from some traveller’s diarrhea. definitely = NO FUN.
and according to this article, looks like we left nepal just in the nick of time (…maoist rebels plan to shutdown tribhuvan airport and all hghways!)

anyway, gonna take a LONG, hot shower and rest/recover before our next assignment, stay tuned…
